Like scratches on vinyl, there’s no disputing Johnny Rotten’s signature sound and mark on rock-and-roll history.
The singer-songwriter best known as the front man of the Sex Pistols helped to bring music anarchy to the U.K. and punk rock to the mainstream in the late 1970’s. However, nearly 40 years after he got his start in London, Johnny Rotten may be better described as Johnny Suburban.
Rotten and his wife, German publishing heiress Nora Foster, are selling their four-bedroom home on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, Calif. Built in 1973, the house spans nearly 2,530 square feet and features a bright interior with vaulted beamed ceilings, Sausalito tile, wood floors and European storm shutters.
A sunlit living-room area features a skylight and a fireplace, and a bohemian-styled kitchen opens to a breakfast nook. Leading through a row of French doors, a large, entertaining deck overlooks a backyard setting with lush fruit trees, a cabana bar and a large pool with a waterfall, spa and brick patio.
The home, located a few steps from Lechuza Beach, last sold in 1990 for $1.2 million. The punk rock legend is currently asking $1.995 million for the quarter-acre sanctuary.
Rotten, who now goes by his real name, John Lydon, recently wrapped up a reunion tour with his other band, Public Image Limited. The controversial artist formed PiL after leaving The Sex Pistols in the late 1970’s, but has still found time to take part in a number of Sex Pistols revivals, most recently in 2008.
