Rent the Winklevoss Twins’ L.A. Party Pad for $150,000 Per Month

Screen-Shot-2015-03-31-at-12.17.51-AM

When it comes to Facebook, finishing second best wasn’t so bad after all.

Bitcoin investors, Facebook-progenitors and former Olympic rowers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss are renting their minimalist Los Angeles mansion for a whopping $150,000 per month—and the social networking possibilities there are limitless. The sleek home is located in the Bird Streets area, tucked on a steep slope high above the Sunset Strip.

Straight out of a movie set, the massive modern five-bedroom, nine-bathroom estate is ideal for entertaining on a grand scale. You don’t rent this place merely to crash for the night. In fact, we’re not sure if any sleeping goes on in this house—unless it’s out of lust. The estate is a pure showstopper.

With easy open-air access via huge sliding glass doors, an L-shaped negative-edge swimming pool, terraces, a tanning-shelf, a lounge with wet bar, media room and jaw-dropping panoramic “jetliner views” of L.A., this home is primed for partying all the time.

The home features polished slab limestone floors throughout the sprawling interconnected spaces, which includes five en-suite bedrooms, an office/library with custom-crafted built-in storage, and a combination kitchen/dining/living area so large it looks abandoned when not used. Clearly this area isn’t the home’s most important space in which to hang out. But it’s nice, and there when necessary.

The 8,000-square-foot contemporary home is immaculately manicured, boasting extensive floor-to-ceiling transparent glass and spaces so wide open, twins could host an “Unthink” rally (antisocial networking group) or an “I Hate Mark Zuckerberg” party for nearly everyone in L.A. not on Facebook.

The Winklevosses (or Winklevi, as tandemly teased in the Oscar-winning The Social Network film) could probably practice rowing in the pool. The space could host a holiday party for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Clippers, and Kings, and still have room leftover. The eventual renter could comfortably ride a bike through the home—and by bike we mean a Harley Davidson. It’s that big and open. The house should be converted into L.A.’s coolest nightclub.

Not exactly warm and cozy (sans the pool and fancy modern fireplaces), the home almost looks staged by two Alpha male perfectionists—down to the James Bond 007 scenes on the massive TV wall and underground garage for six luxury cars or even more crew racing shells.

The Winklevoss Facebook settlement with Mark Zuckerberg elevated the twins to the top 1%.
The venture capitalist identical twin brothers who claimed their Harvard classmate Zuckerberg stole their idea for Facebook (and eventually settled for $65 million), bought the home in 2012 for $18 million (not bad for pseudo-inventors). Even though Zuckerberg’s determination sealed their legacy, the twins and Zuckerberg aren’t likely Facebook friends.

We can only wonder where and how the Winklevoss twins upgraded after this home. But we’re sure the trailer of the next James Bond film is paused on their new media room(s).

Inside Supermodel Molly Sims’ Beverly Hills Home

Molly Sims recently told Lonny that she’d rather “buy a couch than a dress.”

5qwMrXcMKK8x

In the magazine’s profile of the famed supermodel, Sims describes her longtime love for design and her honing of a personal style she calls “a good balance between eclectic and conservative.”

GzN6b4xtvzYx

Sims and her husband Scott Stuber live in a colonial-style home in Beverly Hills, California, which Sims redecorated with help from interior designer Kishani Perera. Notable design choices includeChristopher Farr drapery, vases by En Soie, and tie-dye pillows by Perera, as well as baby furniture and accessories from 3 Sprouts, Aden + Ananis, and Rikshaw Designs. The couples boasts an impressive art collection that ranges from Slim Aarons photography to prints by Damien Hirst.

In addition to her California home, Sims has properties in Paris, Cabo San Lucas, the Hamptons, and Manhattan. “When I bought my apartment in New York, I couldn’t afford it, but I’ve never been able to afford anything I’ve bought,” the  author of the Everyday Supermodel told Lonny.

As far as her property collection goes, Sims is not quite through. She is quoted as saying that she and Stuber are “never done” buying homes, so we suspect that she’ll be adding to her cache of real estate gems once again very soon.

Peek Inside Designer Celerie Kemble’s Whimsical Dominican Oasis

item0.rendition.slideshowHorizontal.celerie-kemble-dominican-republic-compound-01

By Nina Wolpow

Designer and Harvard graduate Celerie Kemble has transformed her family’s vacation home—a beach club in the Dominican Republic—into a fantastical paradise.

Along with her husband, financier Boykin Curry, Kemble planned and outfitted her “familial resort” on the northern shore of the Dominican Republic.

The resort, named Playa Grande Beach Club, follows Dominican vernacular architecture, which means patterned woodwork, metal roofs, and hardware suited to age and patina distinguish the property.

A 22-foot-high central clubhouse grounds the property and features a great room with locally produced furnishings and accessories.

An attractive eclecticism marks the resort’s interiors; vintage finds complement Kemble’s custom designs, while walls and ceilings are painted tranquil, tropical colors.

Other designers featured at Playa Grande are D. Porthault, Casamidy and New Jersey Barn Co.

Barbie’s pied-à-terre is another notable work by Kemble. The designer runs Kemble Interiors with her mother, Mimi McMakin and younger sister Phoebe Kemble.

Pop Star Nick Jonas Lists Hollywood Hills Home for $3.6 Million

q_vC3N0ZJT_l

BY NINA WOLPOW

Nick Jonas, the 22-year-old pop singer best known for his 2014 smash hit “Jealous,” has put his beautiful L.A. home on the market for $3.6 million.

The 2,305-square-foot Spanish-style house sits above Sunset Strip in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills. We’re betting Jonas is looking for a bigger space to share with Miss Universe girlfriend Olivia Culpo, whom he’s been dating since 2013.

The former Disney star’s home is charming and, despite boasting a high-tech security system, remarkably sedate.

Sconces warm the white stucco at night, while a lagoon-style pool is protected by ample landscaping and a privacy wall. A guesthouse is tucked into backyard foliage.

Inside the property, hardwood floors, a deep-soaking tub and off-white upholstery—including a four-poster canopy bed—provide a peaceful oasis from Los Angeles bustle.

Channing Tatum Drops $6 Million for New Beverly Hills Digs

channingtatum_bhpo4-e1424462106264.jpg.pagespeed.ce.96xZmyTtsC

Word on the street is that Hollywood hunk Channing Tatum has just plunked down $6 million for a sweet new single-family in Beverly Hills.

The Magic Mike star—whose new oddball sci-fi flick with Mila Kunis, Jupiter Ascending, is reportedly a regrettable flop—bought the 4,853-square-foot, Cape Cod-style abode with his wife and former Step Up co-star Jenna Dewan-Tatum, via a trust from Mexican filmmaker Roberto Sneider.

The three-story residence—which Carrie Fisher (a.k.a. “Princess Leia”) once called home—showcases a spacious living-dining room combo with double-height ceilings and six baths, not to mention a black-and-white eat-in kitchen outfitted with marble countertops and custom-tile flooring.

To boot, there’s a trio of en suite guest rooms (one with a fireplace), and not one, but two master suites: one on the top level, and one on the main floor originally touted as a game room/den (perhaps a space reserved for baby Everly?).

Most of the rooms on the first level open to various terraces and decks that overlook the estate’s grounds (teeming with trees and shrubbery), which also house an amorphous swimming pool and spa, accompanied by a trellised, stacked-stone fireplace.

The haven is located in the well-to-do Post Office area, whose current A-list residents include Demi Moore and One Direction singer Harry Styles.

The lower Fifth Avenue apartment is crowned with a 1,000-square-foot greenhouse which served as her studio, in which she painted her colorful floral still lives. Freilicher had the distinction of being a highly revered friend and muse to a group of celebrated literary figures including Frank O’Hara, James Schuyler, and Pulitzer Prize-winning John Ashbery, inspiring them to dedicate their works to her, feature her name in their poetry, and even state that she—metaphorically—walked on water.

Fifth Avenue duplex belonging to Jane Freilicher

This uniquely valuable offering boasts high ceilings throughout, a woodburning fireplace, and authentic detail which dates back to the Jazz Age. The beautiful Penthouse is bathed in sunlight thanks to three large terraces on two levels, and the large splendid greenhouse.

Adding to its charm, the apartment has beautifully scaled rooms, beamed ceilings, and classic panoramic village views from four exposures. There is a stone staircase which leads up to a nearly 1000-square-foot greenhouse atelier, which the new owner could transform into into an entertaining space, starlit living room, or a studio.

Fifth Avenue duplex belonging to Jane Freilicher

Built in 1929 atop one 51 Fifth Avenue—one of Greenwich Village’s most distinguished buildings on Lower Fifth Avenue’s “Gold Coast”— the space was home to Freilicher and her family for the last 50 years of her life.

The elegant pre-war building has full time doorman, live in super, two automatic elevators, bicycle storage and a gym. One can’t help but wonder if the person who buys this beautiful home will also go on to inspire great works of art and literature.

Own Charles Wright’s Self-Sufficient Alkira Resort House for $15 Million

By Stephanie Brooke Friedman

Screen-Shot-2015-01-21-at-12.47.13-PM

The extraordinary Alkira Resort House—nestled within 75 acres of lush rainforest a quarter of a mile from the Coral Sea—is located within Cape Tribulation, at the intersection of two World Heritage listings: The Great Barrier Reef and The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

Winner of the prestigious 2014 “House of the Year” award from the Australian Institute of Architects, Charles Wright had been given the brief to deliver a carbon neutral (in operation) solution for an environmentally-sensitive site off-grid on the edge of the FNQ beachfront rainforest.

Wright exceeded expectations, as Alkira—which means “bright and sunny” in the local Aboriginal language—is carbon-neutral and completely self-sufficient, running on solar power and collecting rainwater through its vertical columns that double as support beams. The house is also known as the “Stamp House” for the perforated facade Wright created to pay homage to previous owner Rod Perry’s former profession as a rare stamp auctioneer.

The House—built to withstand category-5 cyclones—is formed in an innovative combination of in-situ and precast concrete. The concrete has been engineered and insulated incorporating a total solar paneled roof to provide for a constant cooler and more comfortable ambient temperature year-round.

The home’s open-air, concrete layout is cantilevered over an artificial lake, which keeps the place cool and breezy and mitigates impacts from flooding and cyclonic tide swings. In addition, the ingenious house has an on-site sewage treatment plant and a grey-water recycling and irrigation system, which leave minimal impact on the surrounding wetlands.

Alkira’s unique six-pointed star structure is supported by vertical columns that collect rainwater. LED lights illuminate geometric shapes on the ceiling at night.

The only spaces with doors are the home’s six “bedroom pods.” Each one has a private balcony, TV with surround-sound, and features a different type of native wood that was either sustainably harvested or salvaged from the forest floor.

Alkira has served as a vacation rental, a home for owner Rod Perry, and even as a storm shelter for Perry’s friends last April.
